When we talk about expression and emotion in our portraits, it’s important to realize that most of that will come from your subject’s eyes. The eyebrows help, the lips can help, too, but in the end, it’s the eyes that will have the greatest impact on the emotion and expression in your shot. It’s one of the reasons we try to make sure the eyes are well-lit and why it’s so important that they’re in focus. The eyes will be the most striking feature of your subject, so make sure you nail the focus (see Chapter 2), as it’s the eyes that will likely make or break your portrait.
