It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Composing for a More Intimate Portrait
One of the easiest, yet most effective portrait techniques is to shoot in tight on your subject (using a zoom lens), so that they nearly fill the frame (as seen here). This creates a more intimate portrait by bringing your subject closer to the viewer. You can achieve this look using a longer lens (85mm or more), or by cropping the image tight, after the fact, in Photoshop or Lightroom.
