See that garbage can above on the far right, and the telephone poles, and the sign post? All of these things make for a messy, distracting background that draws your attention away from the subject. Famous painter Henri Matisse had a great saying about this, which was (I’m paraphrasing here) that if something in the image isn’t helping the overall image, it only stands to reason that it’s taking away from the image. He said it much more eloquently than that, but the point is spot on.
