BEHIND THE SCENES: Here’s a dramatic window light portrait, taken next to a nice big window on kind of a rainy day. The reason that’s nice is the light, which usually would be bright and harsh and direct and yeech, is actually beautifully soft and wrapping. I have my subject seated on a couch just a few feet from the window. If the light had been more direct and harsh, I would have either moved the couch back six feet or so from the window, or I would have moved the couch behind the window by a couple of feet, so we’d get the edges of the direct light, for a softer and smoother effect.
