Chapter 2

Evolution of Total Quality Management

Abstract

During the medieval era when the industrial production was done on a cottage scale, quality was limited to the appearance and strength, etc., judged by common sense and mutual acceptance. The Industrial Revolution and later the competition, free markets, etc., created the need to widen the quality concept which had gradually grown into today’s Total Quality Management. This metamorphosis provides an interesting story and this chapter traces through this quality journey.
