When I went on the O’Reilly platform, I was astonished to find all the books there, plus live events and sandboxes so you could play around with the technology.I’ve been on the O’Reilly platform for more than eight years. I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Test Drive
One specific tool used by both volunteers and developers that deserves a mention is Test Drive. When he wrote Test Drive, Dustin Kirkland was an Ubuntu developer on Canonical’s Ubuntu Server team (he still develops for Ubuntu as a community member, but has moved on to another job). He was looking for an easy way to download and run the latest daily development snapshot of Ubuntu using a virtual machine such as KVM or VirtualBox. Like any good developer who doesn’t want to repeat tasks unnecessarily, he wrote a tool to automate the process. While creating Test Drive, he made it configurable to use different virtual machines with different settings according to the user’s taste.
