Before getting to the fancy bits, let’s be sure we know what options we have for straightforward searches. Many of the buttons in Find/Change are small and cryptic, but useful. There are also well-intentioned but risky features, too. To access it, either go to Edit > Find/Change… or use the shortcut ⌘-F/Ctrl-F. For simple text queries, be sure to be in the Text tab.
To find a word (or phrase) anywhere it occurs in a document, type that text in the Find what field. To simply find instances of that text without necessarily changing it, click the Find Next button. If Backward were chosen under Direction, this button reads Find Previous ...
