Cross-references are a hybrid of text variables and TOC entries. Like both of those features, cross-references (“x-refs”) refer to and can echo text that uses a style. Like TOCs, they most often cite the page on which to find that text—e.g., “see Calca 2: Hemn (Configuration) Space on page 917.” Since cross-references are usually hyperlinks in electronic documents like ePub, I often suppress the appearance of page numbers in that medium. Access the Cross-References panel via Window > Type & Tables > Cross-references.
