Types of Graphics
Graphics for computer systems are grouped into two different approaches that have different strengths and weaknesses. A raster graphic is an image composed of a two-dimensional pixel grid. Each pixel of a raster image has a color associated with it, and the mosaic of color creates a digital surrogate of an object. If you have ever taken a picture with a digital camera, you have created a raster image. A vector graphic, by contrast, uses sets of mathematical formulas to represent the different shapes in an image.
