Monitoring the paging channel all the time consumes current and this reduces battery life, although

much less than when the mobile is transmitting. Battery life is of key importance to any

mobile design, so many schemes to reduce battery drain and ther eby prolong the battery life are

implemented. As a result of this, many mobile systems adopt a procedure whereby the mobile

has to listen for only part of the time.
