The characteristics of the transmission betwee n the forward and reverse links are slightly different.
Much of this arises from the fact that the two links are on different frequencies, and the path
lengths are different in terms of the number of wavelengths travelled. In the forward link, a form of
modulation known as Quadra ture Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) is used. Thi s allows 2 bits per symbol
