It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Hybrid automatic repeat request
In order to maintain the high data transmission rates of 1xEV-DV, it is necessary to ensure the fast
re-transmission of any packets received with errors. As a result, the Automatic Repeat Request
(ARQ) has been migrated from the MAC layer to the physical layer. Hybrid ARQ (HARQ) then
improves the throughput by combining, rather than discarding, those packets that failed with the
current attempt. In this way it is able more quickly and accurately to receive the data and re-build it
if necessary. By adopting HARQ, which acts in the physical layer, shorter round trip delays are
experienced compared to those using higher layer retransmission schemes employed in the Radio
