A field referred to as the Shared Channel Feedback (SCF) field is used to maintain the reverse
channel transmissions. It contains three sub-fields, namely the BRI, R/N and CPE fields. The first
field is the Busy/Reserved/Idle (BRI) field, which informs the mobile whether the RACH is being
used, and hence whether it can access the system to make a call. The Received/Not Received (R/N)
field is used to indicate the result of a random access, along with the Coded Partial Echo (CPE)
field. Additionally, the user data may be abbreviated in a shortened burst and, as shown in
Figure 7.2, one of two formats may be adopted dependent upon the amount of data to be
transmitted.
Data on the forward channel falls into two categories or channels, namely a BroadCast ...
