Channels
When the first forms of NA-TDMA as defined under IS-54 were deployed the system operated in
a very similar way to AMPS, but instead of having an analogue voice or traffic channel it was
digital and enabled three voice channels to be accommodated on the single RF carrier. By allowing
the AMPS FOCC and RECC channels to remain, it was possible to run the two systems together
and give backward compatibility. Nevertheless, some upgrades were required to enable the
additional facilities required by NA-TDMA to operate.
