A further tone, known as the Signalling Tone (ST), is used in AMPS. Unlike the SAT, which is
generated by the base station and then relayed back by the handset, the ST is actually generated
within the handset and has a frequency of 10 kHz. Thus tone is used in combination with the
SAT to provide an indicator of a variety of states during the course of a call. It is also used as
an ‘acknowledge’ signal in some instances.
