Electromagnetic (EM) energy has to pass through the atmosphere twice in reaching Earth and then reflecting back to sensors positioned in a satellite. In doing so, the EM is scattered and absorbed by aerosols, water droplets, and different gas molecules. So, this atmospheric interaction influences DN, and we need to remove this atmospheric effect to get surface reflectance. Landsat provides an atmospherically corrected image, and we can find this information in the metadata provided with the image. If we get a hazy image or we want to conduct analysis over a large area consisting of multiple images, or if we want to measure change over time, it's better to apply atmospheric correction to the images.
