As the composition of business applications from services is key to the process of component- and service-based development, a new technique of application animation may also be useful. Alternative approaches to application animation include design-time visualization and rapid prototyping. These approaches are closer than they may first appear, as the primary difference is that prototyping takes more initial effort but provides richer animation examples. UML object sequence diagrams (OSD), with the OMT (Rumbaugh et al.) 'multi-scenario' extensions are a very powerful technique for designing and defining interacting components.
