5.7 MODELLING OF MECHANICAL SYSTEMS

Mechanical systems are classified into two types:

  1. Translational and
  2. Rotational

The motion of the body during translational motion is along a straight line or curved path whereas during rotational motion, the motion of the body is about its own axis.

5.7.1 Translational Motion

There are three elements which are dominantly involved in the analysis of translational motion. These are given below:

  1. Mass
  2. Spring and
  3. Damper

5.7.1.1 Mass

In the physical model of a mass, it is assumed that its mass is concentrated at the centre of the mass. Figure 5.12 shows that a block of mass M, ABCD is moved and its all particles will undergo an equal displacement.
