Signals and Systems If a function represents a physical quantity or a variable containing information about the behaviour and the nature of the phenomenon is known as a signal. Since a function is mathematically represented as a function of an independent variable, it is denoted by x(t). In a R-L circuit, the current through the resistor or voltage across the inductor is called signal. On the other hand, a device or a set of rules defining the functional relation between the input and output is known as a system.
Continuous time signals if a signal is defined at all values of t where t is a continuous variable, the signal is known as a continuous time signal.
