In many 2D animation programs the notes on paper exposure/dope sheets have been replaced by digital levels displayed upon the computer screen. The director times out his cuts using the story reel almost as an editor would do traditionally. Then the director creates an extra level to write and draw his/her notes digitally using a stylus and tablet. He or she may write on each frame, or create rough sketches for the animator to use as guideposts. All of this has the benefit of immediate and repeated playback.
