A horse increases its speed from a walk, to a trot, then a canter and finally to a gallop, at which it travels at maximum speed.
In the gallop a complete stride takes about half a second, and the order in which the feet hit the ground is: back left, back right, front left, front right—pause—back left, back right, front left, front right, etc. The back legs make the same movement as each other with a slight time lag and the same happens with the front feet. The big push is given by the front feet and after this push the animal becomes momentarily airborne (Fig. 55).
