Drybrush (speed lines) and motion blur are ways an animator illustrates the optical blur the eye sees when in nature an object is moving too rapidly for it to see clearly. In traditional animation the speed line is a throwback with its origins in the graphic representations of rapid movement done in early newspaper cartoons. In later cartoons the speedline was replaced by drybrush technique.
This was a smeared drawing created by the cel painter dabbing excess moisture from the paintbrush and streaking the character’s colors in the direction of the movement. The great stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen achieved the same effect by tapping his cameras tripod as he shot the frame.
