Chapter 3. VRRP Messages
The conventions related to its messages make the assumptions of a protocol explicit. This chapter focuses on these assumptions by explaining how VRRP messages are encapsulated into IP packets and by describing different fields of the VRRP messages. The sections of the chapter dealing with message exchange introduce the fundamental rules to be followed while sending and receiving VRRP messages and explain the obligations and constraints applicable to message senders and receivers. After explaining different security mechanisms associated with VRRP, the section related to message security discusses which mechanism is appropriate for which environment.
