11.1. Extensions to VRRP
This section looks at some innovative extensions to VRRP that widen the protection of VRRP to interfaces that are not running VRRP. We also discuss using VRRP to trigger failover of other protocols that might be running on the same interface. We discuss IGMP in this context, but this could easily be extended to any other protocol such as IPX, bridging, and so on.
11.1.1. Critical IP/Tracking Interface
As the name suggests, there might be one or more interfaces on the box that are critical for connectivity, but VRRP might not be directly running on them because they might be a WAN link or a link to a central office. Consider the example shown in Figure 11-1.
