3.1. Message Format

VRRP packets are encapsulated in IP packets, in other words, they are carried within IP datagrams. Figure 3-1 indicates that a VRRP packet constitutes the data section or the payload of an IP datagram.

Although encapsulated in and carried by an IP datagram, VRRP dictates which values should be assigned to some of IP datagram fields and how these values should be interpreted. For that reason, we pay closer attention to these fields.
