Foreword

I take great pleasure in writing the foreword to this book by Professor

Sudeep Bhattacharjee. He visited our laboratory at the Institute of Physical

and Chemical Research (RIKEN), Japan, through a Japanese Government,

Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (Monbusho) Scholarship in 1996

to carry out doctoral work.

In his book, Professor Bhattacharjee has shown how compact and over-

dense plasmas in the microwave regime can be generated and sustained

using multicusp magnetic elds. Detailed investigations of the physics of

wave interactions with such bounded plasmas have been carried out and
