How to Build a Business Rules Engine

If performance is an issue, it may be necessary to implement as many rules as

possible as single SQL statements. Another way to improve performance is to gener-

ate stored procedures instead of regular program code. Yet another way is to find a

means of not iterating through every record in a table independently for each busi-

ness rule, but rather to read through all records in a table once and apply relevant

business rules within this construct. Thus, code generation techniques may have to

be adapted to the context of the business process step. For the current example we

shall consider the most flexible and easy-to-implement approach, which is to use

record-at-time processing where each business rule operates independently on a set

of records.
