There are a number of business rules engines on the market at the present time, and

they fill several different kinds of niches. Broadly speaking, they fall into two main

groupings. The first are basically inference engines, which can read information from

a database and operate rules in order to find answers to questions that users ask. The

second group is more concerned with deriving results that can be stored in a data-

base after the results have been calculated. All these rules engines are to some extent

generic and have some degree of acceptance in the current market. No doubt there

will be changes in the coming years as the market matures, and there is likely to be

increased product sophistication and differentiation.
