Another reason for not buying a business rules engine is that if it is used to
augment a package that is being purchased, management headaches increase. The
client now has to deal with the vendor of the new system, and also with the vendor
of the business rules engine. Clients would much rather have only one vendor to deal
with. When two different entities are supplying software for a single business need,
this often more than doubles the management required compared to dealing with a
single entity. Clients are also aware that they are likely to encounter integration prob-
lems if the rules engine and software package have never worked together before. This
is a risk that most clients would prefer to avoid.
