Pathways
Relationship information is necessary, but it is not complete enough for a business
rules engine. A business rules engine needs to navigate from one table to another
within the database. These tables must be connected by relationships, and it is rela-
tively easy to go from a table to its immediate parent. It is less easy to go from a table
to its grandparent or great-grandparent. Furthermore, there may be more than one
way to go from a table to any related higher-level table (i.e., parent, grandparent,
