Armin Hofmann was a visitor at Yale, invited by Paul Rand when I was there, and a teacher when I visited Brissago as a student in Switzerland. Armin was kind, calm and insightful, subtle, and generous with his thoughts in my memory.
The poster for the Basler Freilichtspiele has most of the important qualities of great graphic communications. It is ambiguous, playful, and is built upon the knowledge and memory of its audience about the legend of Wilhelm Tell putting an arrow through an apple placed on top of someone’s head.
Hofmann skipped the actual arrow and put the letters of TELL into deep perspective, pointing to the center of a giant ...
