SELECTED BYKRZYSZTOF LENKREQUIEM FOR 500 THOUSANDDESIGNED BYLESZEK HOLDANOWICZ
This Polish poster was designed by Leszek Holdanowicz in 1963 for the documentary movie Requiem for 500 Thousand, on the history and tragic end of the Warsaw Ghetto under German occupation during World War II.
It looks like a simple layout built from easily recognizable elements: a menorah and candle flames. Only with a closer look at the flames, one can discern the hands emerging from darkness, signing to us with simple gestures of people swallowed by the ghetto fire—or perhaps only their souls trying to tell us something.
