Robert Weaver’s (1924–1994) small poster under the title Seeing Is Not Believing, printed in the 1970s, was commissioned by Silas H. Rhodes, founder of the School of Visual Arts. More than a poster, it is a visual essay that shows a photograph transforming into a drawing. The art is quintessential Weaver. He was the undisputed pioneer of contemporary illustration. He introduced the element of time by splitting the page and working sequentially. Functioning more like a writer than an illustrator, he often told more than one story in his visual essays.
