Everything about this image knocks me out. I’m still overwhelmed by John Heartfield’s personal and artistic courage in making, reproducing, and distributing it—considering how, where, and when he did all this. For me, “Adolph the Superman...” is even more than a beloved object.
When I finally got around to making art for nonsanctioned public address in 1986, graphic design wasn’t even Greek to me, it was Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. A beautiful thing, yes. An exotic cryptic code, more so. “Adolph the Superman...” became my personal graphic design Rosetta Stone. Say what? Here’s a rough translation:
