When Swiss designer Herbert Matter, at the age of twenty-seven, started his now iconic poster series for Swiss tourism clients in the early 1930s, he had just come back from a stint in Paris, where he collaborated with A. M. Cassandre, Fernand LÉger, and Le Corbusier.
In Switzerland, his French-inspired flair met the rigid and Bauhaus-influenced ideas of his fellow “foto grafiker” friends such as Max Bill. The result culminates in a series of posters that had nothing to do with the illustrative process that dominated poster design at that time.
