The .vmdk image format is very common in the VMware infrastructure. The main advantage of Proxmox supporting .vmdk is the ease of VM migration from VMware to a Proxmox cluster. A VM created in VMware with the .vmdk image format can easily be configured to be used in a Proxmox cluster and converted. There are no benefits to keeping a virtual disk image file in the .vmdk format, except during a transitional period, such as converting virtual machines from a VMware infrastructure.
