The Essence of the Problem

We have been spending some time talking about how a problem and a solution are different things. For example, there is a difference between “search” and “find.” The essence of the problem is to find something; searching is merely one way of doing it. You might want to know David Bowie’s birthday—you can search for it using a search engine. That’s a solution. But the essence is to know his birthday, and you can come to know it in other ways. For example, you could write to the David Bowie fan club, speak with people who knew him, or look it up in the register of births in Brixton, where he was born. Regardless of how you solve it, the essence is to know his birthday. (It’s January 8, by the way.)
