Chapter 8 goes through the details of why service-oriented architecture and OracleAS Portal are such a good match. In a nutshell, Oracle is marketing OracleAS Portal as a tool to integrate various applications and data throughout your organization. SOA provides the "plumbing" underneath the user interface, and OracleAS Portal provides the UI.
