Line charts
Line charts are the best way to show data related to time. They connect distinct data points presenting them continuously and can show time either as discrete or continuous entities. Discrete time series are useful for comparison of one-time dimensions across another, for example, to find out which two quarters had the least difference in sales across all four years. One quick glance at the Discrete Line Chart graph tells us the answer is Q2 and Q3. Continuous line charts, on the other hand, are useful for understanding the overall trends across time. For example, in the following graph, we can quickly see that sales have increased overall across the 4 years irrespective of the seasonal variations:
