Sleep is essential to maintain a healthy immune system and allow the body to repair itself. The cells in the body regenerate throughout the day but during sleep the body can concentrate all of its resources on repair. Sleep also enables the brain to maintain normal levels of cognitive skills such as speech, memory and innovative and flexible thinking. When we suffer from lack of sleep, we become groggy, find it difficult to concentrate and become irritable. If we are deprived of sleep for more than a day our bodies will eventually force a shut down – you will not be able to resist sleep, taking micro naps if necessary.
