Enterprise architecture is an activity that spans an organisation. It cuts across divisions and organisation structures. It is political – very political. Traditionally the role has lived inside the IT organisation, reporting to the CIO/CTO/director/head of IT. In some cases, it reports to the executive head of finance or operations. Very rarely will the enterprise architect report to the chief executive officer (CEO).
But reporting lines and sponsorship are not the same thing. Supporting change across the organisation requires sponsorship at the highest level to negotiate the politics. If you don’t have good sponsorship, you have your first problem.
