17 A TRUSTED ADVISOR
If you are not the decision-maker (and few enterprise architects are), then you need to be a trusted advisor to those who do make decisions.
One definition of a trusted advisor is based on the trust equation as defined by Maister, Green and Galford in The Trusted Advisor.54 Here, trustworthiness is a function of four key elements: credibility, reliability, intimacy and self-orientation.
People often focus on credibility and reliability, as these are both easiest to achieve and have more objective measures. But unless you are exceptional in these you will also need to build a strong relationship with the people you advise, and demonstrate you are working for their benefit and not your own.
