18 A CRITICAL THINKER
Being a trusted advisor also requires some insight on topics that others want to receive advice on. Some of that may come from experience, but for most it requires critical thinking skills, which can take a lot of practice. Critical thinking requires conscious effort to gather and ensure the relevance of information, understand relationships, avoid bias and be able to make reasoned judgements with inference where data is not available. It also requires a degree of self-reflection to understand how we are analysing the information. This takes a lot of mental energy and focus.
