5 FINDING THE BALANCE

Enterprise architecture has some recurring perceptions and anti-patterns to avoid. No one sets out to be perceived as slow, disconnected from reality, overly prescriptive or a block to progress, but it can be only one small step from just-enough to far-too-much. Five of the most common negative perceptions of enterprise architecture are described as:

  1. The ivory tower: An overly academic or intellectual pursuit of the architecture disconnected from the practical realities of the organisation.
  2. Boiling the ocean: Trying to solve every aspect of the enterprise architecture at once, rather than breaking it down into manageable parts. An overly broad approach often results in slow progress and little impact.
