When people hear “data” or “data visualization,” they tend to think of charts, graphs, spreadsheets, or something abstract and boring that has to do with statistics. And even though its intended purpose is to make big numbers feel more comprehensible, many data visualizations do the opposite.
Earlier in this book, we talked about how visual metaphors have the power to help audiences relate by tapping into existing symbolism (see Principle 7). And if there is one thing we need help relating to, it’s big data and large numbers.
