Retrospectives can turn ugly fast when they are used as an excuse to blame, shame, or humiliate. When this happens, it can understandably turn people off to future retrospectives, even after they move to other teams or begin working at other companies.
The best way to overcome this objection is twofold. First, empathize with the person who had this experience. You might say something like, “I understand you’ve had bad experiences with retrospectives in the past. You were blamed in front of your peers. I want to be clear—that would be awful, and I’d likely not want to participate in retrospectives either, were I the one to have that experience. Fortunately, it’s not how we run retrospectives here.”
