By going beyond port-based security, we can discover a whole range of scenarios where the firewall simply isn't enough. One case would be awareness of the traffic flowing through the open ports. When we open port 443, we would usually expect to find HTTPS traffic to our application to be the only thing that would flow there. But many other application protocols such as VPNs, chat, and file transfers can utilize port 443.
