ベースにおいて、どのようにデータを保持するべきか、その設計についてです。し
かし、その話をする前に、データベースおよび DBMS、そしてシステム開発そのも
のについて少し予備知識を持っておく必要があります。本節と次節ではデータベー
スについて本当に何の知識も持っていない人に向け、必要な予備知識を解説しま
す。そのため、すでに仕事である程度データベースを利用している人は、この1-2
節および 1-3節は飛ばして、1-4 節へ進んでいただいてかまいません。
現在、商用で利用されているデータベースには、何種類かありますが、その分類
は、データを保持するフォーマットを基準にして行なわれています。代表的なモデ
ル（構造／仕様）を挙げると以下のようになります。
関係データベースとも呼ばれ、現在最も広く利用されているデータベースです。
そのため、普通 IT業界では、特に断りなく「データベース」と言えば、リレーショ
ナルデータベースを指します。リレーショナルデータベースは、すでに長い歴史
を持ち、誕生は1969年までさかのぼります。すでに登場してから半世紀、データ
ベースのメインストリームの座にあることになります。
