It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

正規化（normalization）は、エンティティ（テーブル）について、システムで
の利用がスムーズに行なえるよう整理する作業です。特に、正規化は更新（データ
の登録、変更、削除）が整合的に行なえるように、エンティティのフォーマットを
整理することが重要な目的です。
裏を返すと、単にエンティティを抽出し、属性を定義しただけの状態では、ま
だそのエンティティはシステムでの利用にたえる状態にはなっていない、というこ
とです。したがって、リレーショナルデータベースの論理設計においては、この正
規化が最も重要な土台をなします。正規化は、データベースの論理設計を理解す
る鍵と言っても過言ではありません。そのため、本書でも第 3 章で一章を割いて、
ケーススタディを交えた解説を行ないます。
