GPU passthrough is a method to transfer the ownership of the GPU device directly to the guest OS. In this manner, you can avail all the core features of your GPU on the guest OS in VirtualBox. The feature is experimental on VirtualBox and is actually called PCI passthrough. PCIe is how you connect your graphics card to your system's motherboard.
